Mental Health Counseling FAQs

What should I expect during my first counseling session?
Your first session is all about getting comfortable and having an open conversation. Robin will take time to understand what’s bringing you in, what you’d like to work on, and how therapy can best support your goals. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready to either; this is a judgment-free starting point where we map out a plan together.

How often should I come to counseling?
That really depends on your personal needs and what you’re hoping to achieve. Some clients come weekly at first to build momentum, while others find that biweekly or monthly sessions work better once they start feeling progress. Robin will help you find a rhythm that fits your lifestyle, goals, and comfort level.

Can I bring my partner or family member to my first appointment?
Of course. If you’re starting counseling for relationship or family concerns, having your partner or loved one join from the beginning can be very helpful. Robin can guide you through what to expect during shared sessions, making sure everyone feels heard and supported as you work through challenges together.

What if I’ve never been to therapy before?
That’s perfectly okay. Most of our clients are new to counseling when they first come in! Robin takes extra care to explain how everything works, answer your questions, and help you feel at ease. You don’t have to prepare or have all the answers; just come as you are, and we’ll take it one step at a time.

How do I know if counseling is working for me?
You’ll start noticing small but meaningful changes like feeling lighter, thinking more clearly, or handling stress differently. Robin checks in regularly to make sure you’re making progress and adjusts your plan if needed. Therapy is meant to empower you, so success looks different for everyone, but we’ll celebrate every win along the way.
